Ethernet Over Coax Revisited

An inquiry from:  RBC Cable Master System – Tuguegarao City, Cagayan, Philippines
EOC technology is good as start up system in Cable Internet. With your indulgence I have the following queries.

1.       How far a media converter can reach with good forward and return transmission?
Answer:
In the EOC, we used Media Converter that transmit and received 1310nm and 1550nm wavelength in a single fiber optic core. The distance capability of this type of Media Converter ranges from 7.5km up to 30km. Two (2) core Media Converter is used in a long distance transmission of up to 50km using only one wavelength say 1310nm for data transmission in one core and data reception in the other core.

2.       For every node how many cascades of amplifiers an EOC master can handle?
Answer:
In the EOC, we are not dealing with amplifier cascades instead we take the Link Loss as the factor that determines how far an EOC signal can go with high speed Internet connection.
Link Loss is the product of the insertion loss of Diplex Filters, Coupler, Splitters, Taps and the Coaxial cable attenuation up to the subscriber’s cable modem. Remember EOC does not used reverse amplifier along the way to recover Link Loss due to passives and cable loss.

Loss in 30MHZ is used in this example.

1.       What is the best forward frequency to use and for the return path as well?
Answer:
All Forward and Reverse signal frequency of the EOC falls under the Reverse Band of 5-Mhz up to 42-Mhz.
EOC has the following mode of frequency operation but I cannot yet define the exact downstream and upstream frequency.
Mode-A (4 – 20 MHZ), Mode-B (12 – 28 MHZ), Mode-C (36 – 52 MHZ), and Mode-D (4 – 36 MHZ)

2.       Do I need a high pass filter for every tap port of the subscriber with or without cable internet?
Answer:
You only need to put High Pass Filter to the drop cable of the non internet subscribers to block the reverse band interference coming from the noisy TV set and appliances. CMTS requires it but “EOC does not need it” because it can operate in a noisy environment with SNR as low as 12dB.
3.       What is the limitation of the EOC system?
Answer:
Distance of transmission is the limitation of the EOC which is equivalent to 55dBmV Link Loss. Each Master can serve only 64-modems at 160Mbps in Mode A, B, and C and 320Mbps in Mode D.
As per actual deployment, Link Loss of less than 55dBmV will provide High Speed Internet Connection, while Link Loss greater than 56dBmV will result to Very Slow Internet Connection. You can view Total Link Loss of the modem connection in the EOC web page.

4.       How about integrating it with a WI-FI System to gain more and reach farther?
Answer:
It depends on the Controller of the EOC. If the controller allows multiple Mac Address and IP Address in a single EOC Modem then it is good, but for now we are limited to one or two users only. A Wireless Router on the subscriber side however can multiply number of user in a single EOC modem.

5.       Thanks a lot and I do hope you can give us more info’s regarding EOC technology especially the prices of equipment from the Headend down to the subscribers end.

Thank you and more power to EOC!

Answer:
I’ll give you a quotation Sir and Thank you very much for spending your precious time reading my blog and your inquiry has been received with great appreciation.
Best regards,
Hadji P. Jermina
